A research project about phones, brains and growing up.

MyPhone/MyBrain is a University of Leeds study with secondary schools in Bradford and Leeds. It looks at how young people actually use their phones, and how that connects with wellbeing, learning and brain development.

Young people take part through their school, in a workshop where they learn how the brain works from neuroscientists, can wear a lightweight headset that records brain activity (EEG), and see their own brain’s signals live. The workshop has already been tested in 8 schools, with more than 1,000 students. Every young person in the classes taking part is invited, unless a parent or carer opts them out. Separately, and only if they choose, families share screenshots of the phone’s screen-time summary showing which apps are used and for how long. It never shows messages, photos or what was watched.
